Add, share or delete vanity URLs

A vanity URL is a shortened, branded web domain that you have to purchase from an accredited domain name registrar. These custom URL shorteners can be used instead of ow.ly links in the Hootsuite dashboard. Note that only original or country code top-level domains are supported in Hootsuite. Learn more

Before adding a vanity URL

  • Your Hootsuite account must have an organization that contains teams, team members and social networks. Only organization super admins can add vanity URLs, and grant teams access to use them.
  • You need to purchase a vanity URL from an accredited domain name registrar.
  • You need your own website to use as a root redirect.

To add a vanity URL

  1. Select Settings from the launch menu.
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Settings list.
  3. Click Add New Vanity URL Add new vanity URL.png.
  4. In the first field, enter http:// or https:// followed by your vanity URL.
  5. In the second field, enter http:// or https:// followed by a URL to use as a root redirect.
If someone tries to access your vanity URL without a hash on the end of it, they will be taken to this root redirect URL (usually your company website).
  6. Select an organization to add the vanity URL to from the drop-down menu.
  7. Select the team(s) from the next drop-down menu who will have access to use the vanity URL.
  8. Click Save.
Hootsuite will generate one of the following IP addresses:
    • 54.241.242.72
    • 54.241.242.79
    • 54.241.242.82
  9. Copy (command + c for Mac or Ctrl + c for PC) the IP address to update your Domain Name Server (DNS) settings in step 11.
This information will also be sent to the email associated with the Hootsuite account.
  10. Click Finished.
  11. Sign into your domain host account to update the A record in the DNS settings. Paste (command + v for Mac or Crtl + v for PC) the IP address from step 9.

important_icon_37x44.png Your vanity URL will be ready to use in about 24 hours, pending verification that it is configured properly. When your vanity URL has been activated, you will receive an email notification from Hootsuite.

To share vanity URL access with team members

  1. Select Settings from the launch menu.
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Settings list.
  3. Click Share share.png beside the vanity URL.
  4. Select which team(s) can use the vanity URL.

To delete a vanity URL

important_icon_37x44.png Deleting a vanity URL will break all links previously generated with that shortener. Deleting and re-adding a vanity URL will generate a new IP address, and you will need to reconfigure your DNS settings with the steps above.

  1. Select Settings from the launch menu.
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Settings list.
  3. Click Delete Delete.png beside the vanity URL.
  4. Click OK.

Now that you have deleted your vanity URL, you may also want to take a moment to update your DNS settings.
