Instagram Personal profile deprecation - December 2024

On December 4, 2024, Meta is deprecating its Instagram Basic API, which Hootsuite uses to fetch basic user information and media content from Instagram The deprecation of this API means that Meta is no longer allowing third party tools, like Hootsuite, to integrate and manage Instagram Personal profiles.

For more information about the different Instagram profile types, see Convert an Instagram Personal profile to a Business profile.

What does this change mean for you?

As a result of this change, we will no longer be able to support Instagram Personal profiles in Hootsuite. That means that you will no longer be able to:

  • connect or reconnect an Instagram Personal account to Hootsuite
  • publish posts to an Instagram Personal account in Hootsuite
  • view posts published from an Instagram Personal account in Streams or your content calendar
  • create or schedule Instagram posts through Hootsuite's mobile notification workflow
  • share Amplify content to your Instagram Personal account

In addition, we will be making the following changes in Hootsuite starting December 2, 2024:

  • Instagram Personal accounts will no longer be available in Create, Plan, or on draft or scheduled posts.
  • Instagram Personal accounts will no longer be available in Streams, and existing Instagram Personal account streams will no longer display data.
  • Any remaining posts that are scheduled from Instagram Personal accounts will be removed on January 31, 2025.
  • Instagram Personal profiles will be removed from user accounts on January 31, 2025.

What should you do next?

To make sure you can continue to create, publish, and schedule your Instagram content in Hootsuite, we recommend that you convert your Instagram Personal profile to an Instagram Business account.

Not only will converting your Instagram Personal profile allow you to keep using Hootsuite for your social presence on Instagram, you’ll also unlock even more functionality with an Instagram Business account, like:
  • adding the first comment to a post when you publish it
  • inviting other Instagram users to collaborate on your post
  • creating shoppable Instagram posts using product tags
  • boosting an Instagram post for more reach and engagement

To make sure there are no interruptions to your Instagram access in Hootsuite, complete the following steps before December 2, 2024:

  1. Convert your Instagram Personal account to Instagram Business account. For detailed instructions, see Convert an Instagram Personal profile to a Business profile.

  2. Convert all Instagram Personal account scheduled posts that you’d like to keep into drafts, so that they are not removed after January 31. For detailed instructions, see Edit content in your calendar.

  3. Remove your existing Instagram Personal account from Hootsuite. For detailed instructions, see Remove a social account from Hootsuite.

  4. Reconnect your Instagram Business to Hootsuite. For detailed instructions, see Connect an Instagram Business account.
