Create a custom metric in Impact

A custom metric is a unique formula that you can set up to track and analyze the social results that matter to you. You can create, edit, and delete custom metrics in Impact.

You can add, subtract, multiply, or divide existing Impact metrics to create a formula for a metric that’s unique to you and your business goals. See Metrics in Impact for a complete list of metrics.

Before you begin

Make sure you’ve already connected your social accounts to Hootsuite Impact. To learn more, see Connect your accounts to Impact.

Create a custom metric

You can create as many custom metrics as you need and edit or delete the ones you don’t use. Note that editing or deleting a custom metric will edit and delete it for all your organization members in Impact.

  1. Go to Analytics, and then select Settings under Impact reporting.
  2. If this is your first time creating a custom metric, select Get started. If you’ve already created custom metrics, select New custom metric.
  3. Select the type of metric you want to track. You can choose between post-level and Page-level metrics. Learn more about the difference between post-level and Page-level metrics.
  4. Select the social network you want to measure results for.
  5. Note: We will be removing all legacy social network options soon. Select the new Facebook & Instagram ads, LinkedIn ads, and Twitter ads options to view results for your ads. To learn more, see Connect your accounts to Impact.

  6. Select to view your results as a number or percentage. Note that percentage is calculated by multiplying the number by 100.
  7. Enter a name, description, and measurement unit for your custom metric.
  8. Select Add metric to start creating your formula and select from one of the following options:
    • Select Metric to create a simple formula and add metrics one by one.

    • Select Group to group metrics. The "( )" operator is used to calculate the formula inside the brackets first.

    • Select Division to divide two or multiple metrics or groups of metrics.

      Optionally, you can select to add more metrics or groups of metrics to your division calculation.

    To remove a metric from your formula, select X next to it.

    Tip: Creating a more complex formula? Select Expand to view your formula on the entire screen. When you’re done, select Collapse to go back.

  9. Select Search metric to add a metric to your formula. Metric suggestions from the Impact metrics library are displayed as you type.
  10. Select , and then select how you want to calculate your metrics - add, subtract, or multiply.
  11. Once you’re happy with your formula, select Save.

Note: You must enter a metric name and description to be able to save your custom metric.

Edit or delete a custom metric

You can edit or delete any custom metric you’ve created. 

  1. Go to Analytics.
  2. Select Settings from the Impact reporting section to view all of your custom metrics.
  3. Select Edit next to a metric to modify its properties or Delete to remove it from your list.

Analyze the results for your custom metrics

To analyze results for both Page and post level metrics, create a custom report in Analytics and select your custom metrics from the Impact library.

  1. Go to Analytics, and then select New report .
  2. Select Custom report , and then select Create report.
  3. Select Impact, and then search for your custom metrics.
  4. Once you’ve identified a custom metric, select Add to add it to your report and view the results. To learn more, see Create a report in Impact.

  1. Go to Analytics , and then select Impact content.
  2. Select a post to open it in analysis view. Scroll down to the Custom section to view the results for your custom metrics. To learn more, see Review organic performance with Impact content.
