Add a public channel
You can monitor public social media accounts and Pages and collect posts that match your topic search. The data available from the channel may vary depending on the social network and its specific restrictions.
Note: You must have administrator permissions in Hootsuite to add public channels in Listening.
You can add up to 100 channels to your Listening project. The following table summarizes the public channels you can monitor.

Add a channel
- Go to Listening, then select Settings .
- Select the Public Channels tab, then select Add a new channel.
- In the Add a new channel window, select the relevant social media platform.
Note: If there is no account for the social platform added to your project, you need to authenticate with the platform to add the channel. Select the authentication link to proceed.
- Enter the URL of the channel or video (for example, YouTube) you want to monitor, or enter a keyword or hashtag.
- Select a channel in the Suggestions list, then select Add channel.
Manage public channels
On the Public Channels tab, you can show or hide the channels in each social platform, export channel details, edit channel details, and delete channels.
Expand or collapse the channel list
Use the arrow in the heading of a specific social platform section to expand or collapse the list of channels monitored on that platform.
Export channel details
You can export the details of all channels added for a social platform, or for individual channels.
To export details for all channels for a social platform, follow these steps:
- Select More, then select Export.
- In the Export channels window, select a file format (XLSX, XLS, or CSV), then select Export to download the file to your computer.
To export details for a single channel, follow these steps:
- Locate the channel in the list, then select Export.
- In the Export channels window, select a file format (XLSX, XLS, or CSV), then select Export to download the file to your computer.
Edit a channel
You can edit a public channel to add or change the channel description, and change the color of the channel’s icon in the list.
To edit details for a single channel, follow these steps:
- Locate the channel in the list, then select Edit.

On the Channel page, do one more of the following:
- Edit the Channel name.
- Enter or update the text description in the Channel description field.
- Select another color from the Channel color picker.
- Select Delete channel to remove the channel from Listening.
Select Save to confirm your changes.
Add a page to a channel
You can add an additional Page to monitor under an existing public channel when you want to monitor another Page on the same platform.
Delete a channel
To delete a public channel, follow these steps:
- Locate the channel in the list, then select Delete.
- In the confirmation dialog, select Delete.
