Add a Facebook account

Add a Facebook account to Hootsuite to manage publishing and engagement for a group or Page.

Note: Due to changes by Facebook in 2018 to protect user privacy, you can add personal Facebook profiles to Hootsuite, but their integration is read-only. Publishing to profiles is no longer supported.

Super admins, admins, and those with custom Add Social Networks permissions for their organization can add social accounts to organizations.

Before you begin

Hootsuite accesses Facebook Pages and groups through a personal Facebook account that has management permissions for each, but you aren’t required to add your personal profile to the dashboard.

Facebook Pages

  • Ensure that your Facebook user has a Page role of Admin or Editor directly on the Page, or through Facebook Business Manager. To learn more, see Manage Page Settings in the Facebook help center.
  • To add a location Page, the user must have a Page role on the location page itself. Role permissions inherited from the parent page are not recognized in Hootsuite due to a Facebook API limitation.

Facebook groups

  • Ensure that your Facebook user is an Admin of the group. To learn more, see Facebook's Group Management for Admins page.
  • Before adding a group to Hootsuite, a group admin needs to add Hootsuite to the group as an authorized app within the group’s settings in Facebook:
    1. Navigate to the group in Facebook.
    2. Select More below the group's cover photo, and then select Edit Group Settings.
    3. Scroll down to the Apps section, and then select Add Apps.
    4. Select Hootsuite from the list, select Add, and then select Done.

Add a Facebook account

Important: Before adding each new account with the following steps, open another web browser tab, and make sure you are logged out of Facebook (even in private/incognito windows).

Add a Facebook Page or group

  1. Go to My profile , and then select Social networks and teams.
Social networks and teams option selected in the My profile menu
  2. For personal use: Select + Private Network in the bottom left.
For use within an organization: Select Manage beside the org name, and then select Add a Social Network.
  3. Select Facebook from the list on the left, and then select Connect with Facebook.
List of social network options with Facebook selected, showing the Connect with Facebook button
  4. Enter your Facebook account credentials (email and password), and then select Log in.
  5. Select Continue as [your Facebook profile name]. This does not add your profile to Hootsuite, but authorizes the dashboard to access any Pages or groups associated with it.

  6. Select OK in the bottom right of the following permission prompt. This lets Hootsuite access the Pages, groups, and ad accounts that you choose to add. Don’t worry, you haven’t added anything yet!
  7. Select Add beside the Pages, groups, and profiles you want to add to Hootsuite, and then select Done.
    • Is your Page or group not appearing, or is it greyed out? See Troubleshooting.
  8. Optional: If a selected Page has access to an ad account, select the ad accounts you want to add to the dashboard, and then select Done. Add your ad accounts to promote your Facebook Page posts using Hootsuite.

Troubleshoot

1. You are directed to your Facebook Page after step 4

If, after completing step 4 above, you are directed to your Facebook Page inside Facebook instead of to the next step in the connection flow, you are likely using a gray account. Facebook gray accounts are an old type of account no longer supported by Facebook. They are used to admin a Facebook Page without a personal Facebook account, and have their own login credentials.

To fix the issue, make a Facebook user an admin of the Page in the Page’s settings. Then retry adding the Page to Hootsuite with the steps above, and sign in to Facebook at step 4 with the credentials for the user’s account instead. For more information, see How do I manage roles for my Facebook Page? in the Facebook Help Center.

2. Your Page is greyed out at step 7

If your Page is greyed out, you don’t have adequate Admin or Editor Page permissions to add it to Hootsuite. Select Ensure you have adequate permissions to confirm and resolve your permissions issue.

3. Your Page is not appearing at step 7

If your Page isn’t appearing:

  • You may not have selected OK or provided enough permissions when prompted to do so in step 6. Open another web browser tab, log out of Facebook, and start the process over.
  • Your Page may be a location Page, and you don’t have adequate permissions on the Page itself to add it to Hootsuite. See Before you begin.
  • It’s possible that some Page permissions were not granted to Hootsuite during a previous connection with Facebook. Facebook maintains its settings for future social account connections, so you’ll need to update those settings and grant additional permissions.

    To fix this issue
    1. Go to your Facebook account’s Business Integrations.
    2. Select View and Edit next to the Hootsuite app.
    3. Make sure that all of the permissions that mention Pages are toggled on, and if you have multiple Pages, that the Page is selected under each one.

    4. Retry adding your Page to Hootsuite with the steps in this article.

4. Your group is greyed out at step 7

If your group is greyed out, either the Hootsuite app hasn’t yet been added to the group in Facebook, or you aren’t a group admin. See Before you begin.

5. Your group is not appearing at step 7

If your group isn’t appearing, it’s possible that some group permissions were not granted to Hootsuite during a previous connection with Facebook. Facebook maintains its settings for future social account connections, so you’ll need to update those settings and grant additional permissions.

To fix this issue:

  1. Go to your Facebook account’s Business Integrations.
  2. Select View and Edit next to the Hootsuite app.
  3. Scroll down to Post content into groups on your behalf and ensure your group is checked.
  4. Retry adding your group to Hootsuite with the steps in this article.
