Like, reply, retweet, and message in Twitter streams

In Hootsuite Streams, you can like or unlike tweets from all Twitter streams, and you can respond to tweets from your Twitter streams with a reply, a retweet, or a private direct message.

Like or unlike a tweet

When you like a tweet, the creator of the tweet is notified.

Tip: Consider adding a Likes stream to your Hootsuite dashboard.

To like or unlike a tweet

  1. Go to Streams , and then select the board hosting the stream.
  2. Select Like  below the tweet.

Reply to a tweet

Replies are public tweets to one or more users. They display the other @usernames in the conversation above your tweet, so they are not included in the character count.

To reply to a tweet

  1. Go to Streams , and then select the board hosting the Twitter stream.
  2. Select Reply  below the tweet.
  3. Enter your message, and then select Send.

Note: Replies don't support composing features like content library access or link shortening. So Business and Enterprise plan members use a different reply workflow by default. To enable the standard reply experience for your organization, please contact your customer success manager.

Retweet

Retweeting allows you to re-share someone else's tweets to your followers. You can retweet a message as-is, quote it to embed the original tweet as an image in your tweet, or edit or add to it before sending. See What's the difference between retweet styles? below to learn more.

Retweeting or quoting your own tweets from Streams can also be useful for when you want to resurface earlier tweets or quickly reuse already-approved content.

To retweet

  1. Go to Streams , and then select the board hosting the Twitter stream.
  2. Select Retweet  below the post to retweet the message as-is. Or, select the retweet drop-down arrow  and select one of the following:
    • Retweet from to retweet from a different Twitter handle
    • Quote to embed the original tweet as an image within your tweet
    • Edit to modify your tweet before sending

Note: If you don't see these options when you select Retweet, enable Use Twitter Web retweets in your Hootsuite account preferences: Go to My Profile , select Account settings, preferences, and billing, and then select Preferences.

Send a direct message

You can send direct messages only to users who follow you, unless you have opted in to receive direct messages from anyone in your Twitter settings.

Important: Quoted tweets do not appear in Mentions or Retweets streams.

To send a direct message

  1. Go to Streams , and then select the board hosting the Twitter stream.
  2. Select More Actions  below the tweet, and then select Direct Message.
  3. Enter your message, and then select Send Now.

What's the difference between retweet styles?

Selecting the arrow beside Retweet  gives you four retweet options: Retweet, Retweet from, Quote, and Edit.

Select Retweet to forward the tweet to your followers. Your name appears above the tweet as the retweeter.

Select Retweet from to choose the Twitter account from which you want to retweet. The name of the Twitter account you choose appears above the tweet as the retweeter.

Select Quote to add your own comments to the tweet you are sharing. The original tweet is essentially a link preview of a Twitter URL within your tweet. Because the quote is a link, it reserves 23 characters in the tweet and appears with just the link in Scheduled streams and the Publisher. The preview image appears after the tweet is published on Twitter.

Select Edit to modify the tweet before sending. The compose box automatically populates with the original tweet, preceded by RT and the author’s @username to indicate a retweet. The RT and username are included in the character count.

Note: If you don't see these options when you select Retweet, enable Use Twitter Web retweets in your Hootsuite account preferences: Go to My Profile , select Account settings, preferences, and billing, and then select Preferences.
