Add, share, or delete a vanity URL

A vanity URL is a shortened, branded web domain. You can use a vanity URL as a custom URL shortener, instead of using ow.ly links to shorten links in your social posts. Having branded links is another opportunity to increase brand awareness, while still tracking click-through metrics in Analytics. Vanity URLs have to be purchased from an accredited domain name registrar before they can be used in Hootsuite.

Plans: Team, Business, Enterprise

Before you begin

You need to have the following before you can add a vanity URL to Hootsuite:

  • An organization in your Hootsuite account that contains teams and social accounts. Only organization super admins can add vanity URLs. If your account is on a Team plan but you have no additional team members, see Work with a Hootsuite organization (Team plan).
  • A vanity URL domain that you have purchased from an accredited domain name registrar. This needs to be a domain that is not currently in use with an active website. See Register a domain name for a vanity URL for more information.
  • Your own website to use as a root redirect.

Important: Make sure your vanity URL is not in use by another service like Gigya or bit.ly, as making changes to a vanity URL can break existing links for other integrations that are using it.

Add a vanity URL to Hootsuite

  1. Go to My profile my-profile.png, and then select Account settings, preferences, and billing.
Account settings, preferences, and billing selected in the My profile menu.
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Account & Settings list.
  3. Select Add New Vanity URL .
  4. In the first field, enter http:// followed by your vanity URL.
  5. In the second field, enter http:// followed by a URL to use as a root redirect. If someone tries to access your vanity URL without a hash on the end of it, they will be taken to this root redirect URL (usually your company website).
  6. Select an organization to add the vanity URL to from the drop-down menu.
  7. Select the team(s) from the next drop-down menu who will have access to use the vanity URL in the legacy composer. All organization members can access it in the new Composer.
  8. Select Save.
Hootsuite will generate one of the following IP addresses:
    • 54.241.242.72
    • 54.241.242.79
  9. Copy (command + c for Mac or Ctrl + c for PC) the IP address to update your Domain Name Server (DNS) settings in step 11.
This information will also be sent to the email associated with the Hootsuite account.
  10. Select Finished.
  11. Sign into your domain host account to update the A record in the DNS settings:
    • In the Hostname field, enter @.
    • In the IP address field, paste the IP address from step 9 (command + v for Mac or Crtl + v for PC).

How to edit the A record with various domain registrars:

Important: Your vanity URL will be ready to use in about 24 hours, pending verification. When your vanity URL has been activated, you will receive an email notification from Hootsuite.

Tip: Create link settings presets that include your vanity URL for your team members to use in the Composer.

Share vanity URL access with team members

All vanity URLs are accessible to all organization members by default in the Composer. For someone to be able to access a vanity URL in the legacy composer, an organization super admin needs to share it with them using the following steps:

  1. Go to My profile , and then select Account settings, preferences, and billing.
Account settings, preferences, and billing selected in the My profile menu.
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Account & Settings list.
  3. Select Share  beside the vanity URL.
  4. Select which team(s) can use the vanity URL in the legacy composer.

Delete a vanity URL

Important: Deleting a vanity URL will break all links previously generated with that shortener. Deleting and re-adding a vanity URL will generate a new IP address, and you will need to reconfigure your DNS settings with the steps above.

  1. Go to My profile , and then select Account settings, preferences, and billing.
Account settings, preferences, and billing selected in the My profile menu
  2. Select Vanity URLs from the Account & Settings list.
  3. Select Delete  beside the vanity URL.
  4. Select OK.

Now that you have deleted your vanity URL, you may also want to take a moment to update your DNS settings in your domain host account.
