Manage Hootlet

Hootlet offers all the same functions for sharing and sending content that are found in the Hootsuite dashboard's compose message box. The difference is that it works directly from your web browser, saving you time by preloading shareable content right from the webpage you are viewing.

Hootlet is available for free as a Chrome Extension, Firefox Add-on and Safari or Internet Explorer Bookmarklet. Users must be signed into Hootsuite to use Hootlet.

 Chrome

 Install or Uninstall Hootlet from Your Chrome Browser

Hootlet for Chrome makes it easy to search, compose and share content from your Chrome browser.

Hootlet for Chrome also supports social searches in Google, Google Maps and Google Images, as well as photo and video sharing from Google Images, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest and YouTube.

To install Hootlet in your Chrome browser

  1. In the Hootsuite dashboard, hover your mouse over Tools tools on the launch menu, and then click Install Extension.
  2. Click Add To Chrome.
  3. Click Add.

Hootlet hootlet will install in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser.

To uninstall Hootlet from your Chrome browser

  1. Right-click Hootlet in the top-right corner of the browser, and then select Remove from Chrome.
  2. Click Remove.

 Customize Hootlet's Settings

Enable or disable certain Hootlet settings that determine things like what kind of content can be shared, or what kind of search results show.

To customize Hootlet's settings

  1. Right-click Hootlet in the top-right corner of the browser, and then select Options.
  2. Click On to turn a feature off or click Off to turn a feature on, and then click Save Changes.

 Share by Right-Clicking

Share selected text, images, links or webpages easily with a right-click. Hootlet will populate with the selected text, link or image, and a link to the webpage as well. Then prepare your message just like you would in the Compose message box of the Hootsuite dashboard: select social networks to share the content with, edit your message (this might include attaching images or adding your location) and then AutoSchedule or Schedule your message, or click Send Now.

To share selected text

Click-and-drag your mouse over a selection of text to highlight it, right-click and then click Share selected text via Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the selected text and a shortened link to the webpage.

To share a link

Right-click a link, hover your mouse over Hootsuite Hootlet, and then select Share link via Hootsuite Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the text of the link and the shortened link.

To share an image

Right-click an image and select Share image via Hootsuite Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the image and a link to the image.

To share a webpage

Right-click somewhere on the webpage and then select Share page via Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the title and a shortened URL of the webpage.

Click Hootlet to populate it with the title and shortened URL of the web page you are viewing. Then you can select your social networks and customize your content before sending or scheduling your message.

To share a webpage by clicking Hootlet

Locate a webpage to share, and then click Hootlet hootlet in the top-right corner of your browser.

 Use Hootlet for Twitter Searches

Enable the social search results setting in Hootlet for Chrome to give social context to your searches in Google based on keyword, or in Google maps and Yelp based on location. Hootlet will display Twitter results for your search along the right side of the page. Here you can view Twitter profiles, reply to tweets and retweet, and even add the Twitter search results as a stream in your Hootsuite dashboard.

To view Twitter results for Google searches

If social search results are enabled, then Twitter Results will automatically display on the right of the page as you search in Google.com.

To view geo-located Twitter results in Google maps

  1. Open Google Maps, enter an address or location, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click Tweets Near Here under the address. The Twitter Results will populate on the right of the page.
  3. Optional: Adjust the radius of results between 500m away and 25km away from the location.
  4. Clicking Hootlet in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser will populate the compose box with the address and link to the Google map page.

To view geo-located Twitter results in Yelp

  1. Open Yelp, enter a search query, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click an establishment name.
  3. Click Tweets Near Here in the top-right corner of the page. Twitter Results will populate on the right of the page.
  4. Optional: Adjust the radius of results between 500m away and 25km away from the location.
  5. Clicking Hootlet in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser will populate the compose box with the name of the business and a link to the Yelp page.

To create a stream of your Twitter results

  1. Click Add to Hootsuite below the Twitter results.
  2. Click Add to New Tab or click Add To Existing Tab, click to select the tab, and then click Save.

 Share Photos and Video with Hootlet

Hootlet for Chrome can be used to share photos and videos on websites such as Google Images, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr.

Note: Videos embedded in web pages are not supported at this time.

To share images from Google Images

  1. Open Google Images, enter a search query, and then press ENTER.
  2. Select an image, and then click Hootlet under the image name. Hootlet will populate with the image name and a shortened link to the image.

To share YouTube videos

  1. Open YouTube, enter a search query, and then press ENTER.
  2. Select a video.
  3. Click Hootlet under the video name. Hootlet will populate with the name of the video and a shortened link to the video in YouTube.

To share Instagram photos

  1. Open and sign in to Instagram.
  2. Locate an image to share, click the more menu more in the bottom-right corner of the image, and then click View Photo Page.
  3. Roll your mouse over image, and then click Hootlet in the top-right corner of image. Hootlet will populate with the image caption and a shortened link to the image.

To share Pinterest photos

  1. Open and sign in to Pinterest.
  2. Click an image, roll your mouse over the image, and then click Share with Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the image caption and a shortened link to the Pinterest page.

To share Flickr photos

  1. Open and sign in to Flickr.
  2. Roll your mouse over an image, and then click Hootlet. Hootlet will populate with the image caption and a shortened link to the image.

 Disable or Enable Hootlet in Your Chrome Browser

Temporarily disable and enable Hootlet in your Chrome browser without having to uninstall and reinstall.

To disable or enable Hootlet in your Chrome browser

  1. Click Customize and control Google Chrome in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Select Extensions from the menu on the left.
  4. Uncheck Enabled beside Hootsuite Hootlet to disable it. Check the box again to enable the extension.

 Firefox

 Install or Uninstall Hootlet from Your Firefox Browser

The Hootlet Firefox Add-on makes it easy to search, compose and share content from your Firefox browser.

To install Hootlet into your Firefox browser

  1. In your Hootsuite dashboard, hover your mouse over Tools tools on the launch menu , and then click Install Extension.
  2. Click Add to Firefox.
  3. Click Install now.
  4. Click Restart Now to complete the installation.

Hootlet will install in the top-right corner of your Firefox browser.

To uninstall Hootlet from your Firefox browser

  1. Open your Firefox browser, click Tools on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then select Add-ons.
  2. Select Extensions from the menu on the left.
  3. Click Remove beside Hootsuite Hootlet.
  4. Click Restart now.

 Disable or Enable Hootlet in Your Firefox Browser

Temporarily disable and enable Hootlet in your Firefox browser without having to uninstall and reinstall.

  1. Open your Firefox browser, click Tools on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then select Add-ons.
  2. Click Disable or Enable beside Hootsuite Hootlet.
  3. Click Restart now.

 Safari

 Install or Uninstall Hootlet from Your Safari Browser

Hootsuite’s Hootlet has been designed as a Safari bookmarklet that makes it easy to search, compose and share content from your Safari browser.

To install Hootlet into your Safari browser

In your Hootsuite dashboard, hover your mouse over Tools tools in the launch menu, and then drag-and-drop the Hootlet icon onto the bookmark toolbar at the top of the browser.

Hootlet will be listed with your other Safari bookmarks.

To uninstall Hootlet from your Safari browser

Right-click the Hootlet bookmark, and then click Delete.

 Use Hootlet in Safari

Hootlet pre-populates the compose window with the title and shortened URL of the web page you are viewing. Then just select your social networks and customize your content before sending or scheduling your message.

To use Hootlet in Safari

  1. Locate a page to share, and then click Hootlet on the bookmarks toolbar.
  2. Click to select social network(s) to share content with.

 Internet Explorer

 Install or Uninstall Hootlet from Your Internet Explorer Browser

Hootsuite's Hootlet has been designed as an Internet Explorer bookmarklet that makes it easy to search, compose and share content from your Internet Explorer browser.

To install Hootlet into your Internet Explorer browser

Hover your mouse over Tools tools on the launch menu, and then drag-and-drop the Hootlet icon onto the bookmark toolbar at the top of the browser.

Hootlet will be listed with your other Internet Explorer bookmarks.

To uninstall Hootlet from your Internet Explorer browser

Right-click the Hootlet bookmark, and then click Delete.
