Create Facebook and Instagram authentication tokens in Insights

You can use Insights to find, explore, and monitor important topics and conversations on Facebook and Instagram. To get started, you need to create Facebook authentication tokens for your Facebook Pages and Instagram Business accounts, and then add the Pages, accounts, and hashtags you want to track. This allows Insights to collect all the data you’re interested in and return the most relevant results for your search queries.

Create an authentication token

  1. Go to Insights, select , and then select Manage tokens and targeted data.
  2. Select Connect with Facebook to authenticate with your Facebook account.
  3. Select Continue as (profile name).
  4. Optional: Select the Instagram Business accounts you want to use with Insights, and then select Next.
  5. Select the Facebook Pages you want to use with Insights, and then select Next.
  6. Select your privacy settings, and then select Done.
  7. Select OK.
  8. On the pop-up that appears, review and select the pages you want Insights to have access to, and then select Allow.

If you don't have access to the Facebook account, you can invite the account admin or another person with access to the account to authenticate on your behalf. The recipient of the link doesn't need to be an Insights member to authenticate the Facebook account. Select Copy to copy the link and then share it with the person who can authenticate on your behalf.

You can view your authentication tokens in the Facebook Tokens table.

Note: If one of your Facebook tokens has an Inactive status, select Connect with Facebook at the top and try repeating the previous steps.

There are two types of tokens, depending on the permissions you select during the authentication process.

  • User tokens are created when you authenticate with Facebook but don’t grant Insights access to the Facebook Page on which you have a role. User tokens can be used to target any public Facebook Page that is visible to you. Adding this page as a targeted data source allows Insights to collect all the public wall posts and comments on that Page. To learn more, see the following section Add the pages, accounts, and hashtags you want to monitor.
  • Page tokens are created when you authenticate with Facebook and also grant Insights access to the Facebook Page on which you have a role. Page tokens give Insights elevated access to the content on that Page, including to the ads posted by that Page and the comments on those ads. Additionally, if you grant Insights access to an Instagram Business Account linked to your Facebook Page, Insights can also collect content from Instagram. This includes up to 30 targeted hashtags, media posted by that account, and engagement with that account (comments, favorites, @mentions).

Add the pages, accounts, and hashtags you want to monitor

Specify which Facebook Pages, Instagram Business accounts, and Instagram hashtags you want Insights to collect data from by adding targeted data sources.

  1. Go to Insights, select , and then select Manage tokens and targeted data.
  2. Select Targeted Data Sources to view a list with the Facebook Pages, Instagram Business accounts, and hashtags added by your team.
  3. Select Add to add a new data source.
  4. Select the type of data you want to collect:
  • Select Owned Facebook Page to collect all of this Page’s wall posts, ads, and comments on those posts and ads.
  • Select Owned Instagram Business Account to collect all media posted by this Account, comments on that media, and all engagement with the account (tags, @mentions).
  • Select Facebook Page (Non-Owned) to collect competitors’ wall posts and comments on those posts.
  • Select Instagram Hashtag to collect all public posts and media shared on Instagram using one or more hashtags. You can add up to 30 unique hashtags in any rolling 7-day period.

Notes on adding targeted data

  • To add an Owned Facebook Page, there must be a valid Page token for this Page on the Authentication Tokens tab.
  • To add an Owned Instagram Business Account, there must be a valid Page token for this Page on the Authentication Tokens tab with permission to access the connected Instagram Business Account.
  • To add a Facebook Page (Non-Owned), there must be at least one valid User token on the Authentication Tokens tab.
  • To add an Instagram Hashtag, there must be a valid Page token for this Page on the Authentication Tokens tab with permission to access the connected Instagram Business account.
