Connecting a WordPress blog to Hootsuite lets you update your blog from the same place you post to your social networks. You can add a blog hosted on WordPress.com as a social network, and add a self-hosted blog (WordPress.org) through the app directory.
Not sure if your blog is hosted on WordPress.com or self-hosted? Try adding it using the WordPress.com method. If you receive an 'Invalid username or password' error despite entering the right credentials, your blog is probably self-hosted and you can use the WordPress.org method.
To add a WordPress.com blog
- Select your profile picture ( by default) from the top-right corner of the dashboard, and then select Manage social networks.
- Click Add a Private Network on the bottom-left corner of the dashboard.
- Select WordPress from the list, and then click Connect with WordPress.
- Enter your WordPress credentials and then click to log in.
- Click Approve to authorize the connection between Hootsuite and WordPress.
Note: If you have more than one blog in your account Hootsuite will add the blog you've set as your primary site. You can change this setting in your WordPress.com account.
After you've added your blog you can post to it using the compose message box:
Like with other social networks, you can click Add Stream to create streams with content from your WordPress.com account. Add streams to see the posts you've sent, posts you have scheduled to go out, and posts from the blogs you follow.
Note that our integration with WordPress.com does not support the ability to set a featured image for your post, and any images you attach will be uploaded to Ow.ly and not WordPress. This means that the post will include links to the images instead of displaying them.
To add a self-hosted (WordPress.org) blog
- Select App Directory from the launch menu.
- Search for 'WordPress' in the top right search box.
- Click Install in the bottom-right corner.
- Check the box beside the WordPress.org stream.
- Select Add streams to a new tab, or select Add streams to an existing tab and then select the tab from the drop-down list.
- Click Finish.
- In the WordPress.org app stream, enter your blog information and WordPress.org credentials and click Find Your WordPress to connect your site.
To create and publish a blog post, click on the pencil icon at the top of the stream. Because the app offers posting, your WordPress.org site will not appear in the profile picker along with your other social networks.
To view different content in the stream, click on the magnifying glass icon and select posts, pages, or comments.
Note that our integration with WordPress.org does not support the ability to schedule blog posts or to set a featured image for your post.
If you encounter the message: "Error: Could not find your blog” when attempting to connect your WordPress.org site, try addressing the following:
- Ensure that your WordPress.org site is running the latest version of WordPress with all the latest updates.
- Confirm that your WordPress.org site is XML-RPC enabled.
- Special characters in a password can cause login errors. We suggest changing your password to one with only letters and numbers.
- Use the URL of your blog’s landing page. For example: http://blog.hootsuite.com/. Try with and without "http://"
- Third-party plugins such as Bad Behaviour, Block Bad Queries, Better WP Security, or Login Lock can cause issues signing in or connecting to the app.
- Some users have encountered issues with the stream displaying “No More” for Published Pages and Published Posts. We have found that blogs with 'W3 Total Cache' installed, or blogs with a large number of posts, may be causing the app stream to load blank.
- Although the blog could be valid, when the format/customization is too complex, errors can occur. Simplified blogs that use templates work best.
