Viewing Retweets in a List Stream

David Russell
asked this on November 30, 2010 09:07

I have maintained my default layout of streams in Hootsuite, and have created additional sets of streams displaying my Twitter lists. I have only noticed today though that as far as I am able to see a users' tweets, I cannot see what they retweet unless I view my Home Feed.

I have also noticed that if I click on a tweep, those retweets are not visible in the 'pop-up'.

I  would like to know if it is possible to set up my Twitter lists in my streams so that I am able to see not only what someone tweets, but also what they retweet, without having to view my home feed or to click through to that user's Twitter profile.

These tweeps are not using Hootsuite either, but various platforms - web (twitter), via facebook, iPhone etc.

TIA

David

Hi David!

On Twitter, there are two things called "retweets" that are nonetheless quite different from each other: Twitter Web Retweets and "old style" Retweets. Twitter Web Retweets is what happens when you press the "Retweet" button on Twitter's web interface. "Old style" Retweets, on the other hand, are created by inserting "RT @username" as text in front of a message. One form of retweet is an API process; the other is text-based.

This is significant because Twitter does not display Twitter Web Retweets in Lists -- whether on HootSuite or on their default web client. However, they do display "old style" Retweets in Lists. In order to see Twitter Web Retweets, you will therefore need to view the user's home feed.

Twitter Search displays all RTs -- whether Twitter Web Retweets or "old style" Retweets -- the exact same way. Nevertheless, the two forms of retweets are very different from each other, especially when viewing them in HootSuite Mentions or Lists columns, or when viewing your profile on Twitter Web.

Do I understand this correctly?  Anyone following us via a list/stream on Hootsuite will not see our web retweets in the stream?  And in return, I don't see their web retweets in the list I use to follow them?  I need to understand this, please elaborate.

I didn't hear back from you regarding this information. Please elaborate.  Is this completely under the control of Twitter?  If so, please provide a function for RT on HootSuite that will automatically shorten a message. It's of no good whatsoever for anyone not to see retweets.  It undermines the reason for following some people when Twitter is used for business.

Karen - I believe you have it correct in that lists do not show web-based retweets (text-RT retweets are shown) which is how twitter (not hootsuite) implemented the lists.  You always get everything with home feeds.

It's personal preference weather it's a good or bad thing.  A twitter list is limiting in nature - it gives you a subset of your whole twitter feed.  I like the fact that web retweets aren't in there - they are literally somebody else's tweet that i did NOT put in the list.  BUT........ those web-retweets aren't lost (even if you only use lists) - take advantage of the "Retweets, to me" stream!!!! This actually puts all those retweets in one place which is again categorized (like a list) as "stuff i don't follow that my friends/contacts like".

In my opinion, we actually have the best of both worlds .... If you're tweeting and you want to make sure your followers see your RT's even if they're using lists - simply use text RT's.  As a follower, we can split off contacts in lists and also split off the web-RT's for easier categorized viewing.  The main key is to know that the "Retweets, to me" column should really complement the use of lists if people care about viewing web-RT's.  Hootsuite is doing a great job of helping us organize and have our own work flow - switch RT style on the fly!

I wouldn't want to see the retweet of someone I already follow, i.e. Let's say JaneDoe sent out a clever line.  Then 20 people I follow retweeted it.  No, I wouldn't like that a bit, in my home stream or a list.  But, if I don't follow JaneDoe and she said something clever that someone I do follow retweeted, yeah, I'd want to see that.

I understand that most of this is out of the hands of hootsuite and part of what twitter does.

Another thing about retweets.  Sometimes you miss the actual tweet, there's so much being tweeted.  It's nice sometimes to catch a retweet later by someone else.

Still think API retweets should be in list streams.

Is it possible for hootsuite to have a column stream of people who have solely retweeted my tweets?  Kind of like the @/mentions, except for it's retweets of me.

Can hootsuite now add this "retweets on list" feature?

as we have other apps (flipboard, twitterrific, twicca, twitrocker) that have succeeded in displaying retweets on list.

Hello, from my experience, hootsuite is much better in dealing with lists than twitter itself. However, it's very important to note that "Retweets, to me" stream is not available on hootsuite andriod applications. This is very important that you do provide it on the application as many of us use the application more than the web version. Hope that you can fix it soon

I use Hootsuite - and am unable to see retweets in my lists (very annoying) - I use the 'retweets to me' stream to see all the retweets that the people I follow have made. But Hootsuite saying they can't include them in lists because this is something that Twitter has determined is not true. I use Tweetbot on my iPad and I have the same lists and am able to see the retweets in my list streams. So come on Hootsuite, why can't we see the retweets in the Hootsuite dashboard in our lists??

I've tried to read this whole thread so I hope I didn't miss this if it was already answered.

Hootsuite lets you add a stream for "My Tweets, Retweeted." So it looks like these are web based retweets because the text based RT, have RT @myname and show up in my Mentions stream.

Is it possible to tell WHO Retweeted your tweet with the web based Retweet? These are the ones that show up in the "My Tweets, Retweeted{ stream.  In the Twitter interface I can't make a stream for this but I can see WHO retweeted. In Hootsuite I have the stream but I can't tell WHO.

Any suggestions?

Other Twitter clients are able to display both types of re-tweets withing a List - as mentioned above - but I'll add that Tweetbot - the iPhone and iPad app displays both web-based and text-based RT's in Lists. In Hootsuite I have to use a separate column 'retweets to me' - again as someone else has mentioned - to be able to see them. If other twitter clients are able to display them, why not Hootsuite?

If you'd like to see who retweeted your messages regardless of whether they've used the new style or old style retweet create a search stream for "@username" and you'll see all mentions, old retweets AND new retweets.

As for seeing new style retweets in lists this is an issue that Twitter needs to resolve so that users experience is improved across all of the platforms they use to view Twitter lists.
